Over Black Water (Kennett Square, PA)

paddle-shaped leaves with three long-stemmed blossoms, one low-sitting over black water

The large blossoms and leaves of water lilies spread out over a cultivated pool at Longwood Gardens. Near Philadelphia, Kennett Square, Pennsylvania.

My visit to Longwood Gardens was very much an exercise in immersing oneself in cultivated “natural” beauty. These lily ponds were artfully done like the rest of the grounds, but I will say about the black water, which is purposefully produced, that while it gives a clean tableau to present the plants, it also suggests more troubling things. It makes me wonder with a resolute uncertainty, what’s hidden beneath the surface?
